Belgium Seizes Suspected Russian Oil Tanker

Belgium has seized an oil tanker belonging to the Russian “shadow fleet” suspected of operating with false documents, raising concerns over environmental risks and complicating Western sanctions against Russia. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced that armed forces had boarded the ship, now named Ethera, which is on the EU’s sanction list.

Over recent hours, French military support allowed for boarding operations. The vessel has been escorted to Zeebrugge where it will be seized. A Belgian official stated that Ethera was flagged as a threat due to its potential use in facilitating Russia’s oil exports despite Western sanctions targeting Moscow’s revenue from crude sales.

The Russian embassy in Belgium claimed ignorance of the seizure, insisting on obtaining information regarding any Russian nationals aboard the vessel. Both sides have raised concerns about the environmental and safety risks associated with shadow fleet operations, questioning compliance with international maritime standards and insurance requirements typically enforced for commercial shipping.

Francken emphasized that this move is part of Belgium’s commitment to addressing Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine, saying, “Without its shadow fleet Putin can’t wage war against innocent Ukrainians. So we take these vessels out one by one until his aggression stops.”

Additionally, the Belgian prosecutor noted during an inspection on board Ethera indications of false flags and suspected fake documents were confirmed. The ship was ordered to be diverted into Belgian territorial waters for further investigation.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Shehba echoed this stance, urging partners to follow suit in targeting Russia’s shadow fleet with sanctions and practical measures while simultaneously advancing peace through decisive action.

This move marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict by disrupting one of Moscow’s key strategies for maintaining its oil exports under Western pressure. The seizure underscores Belgium’s determination to enforce sanctions against Russian maritime activities, potentially setting an example for other nations in the international response to Russia’s aggression.
