Mayim Bialik, actress and former child star of “The Big Bang Theory,” faced backlash from family members over her criticism of COVID-19 school closures and the 2020 Black Lives Matter marches.
In an interview on The Second Thought podcast, Bialik revealed she simply wanted to discuss these issues but was met with disapproval instead. She recalled being accused by some relatives of being a Republican due to her opinions, despite identifying as a liberal who advocates for respectful dialogue.
Bialik also recounted facing criticism when she expressed doubts about then-President Joe Biden’s decision to run for re-election, leading to accusations that she had “turned” on Democrats. She emphasized the importance of democracy allowing people to disagree without resorting to hostility.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated divisions and made public discourse more challenging, according to Bialik. Both political factions became increasingly polarized during this period.
Reflecting on her career as a child actor in Hollywood, Bialik shared that her parents grounded her to ensure she focused on schoolwork despite her early fame. She later earned a PhD in neuroscience before returning to television with “The Big Bang Theory.”
