In September 2025, during his stint as the Emcee in the Broadway production of Cabaret, renowned actor Billy Porter pulled out due to a “serious case” of sepsis. However, little did anyone know that beneath this public health crisis lay a hidden peril.
Porter’s battle with sepsis escalated when he was diagnosed with an alarming complication: a kidney stone had become trapped in his urethra, leading to urosepsis, where the infection originates in the urinary tract and spreads to vital organs. This condition sent him spiraling into grave health complications so dire that doctors resorted to using ECMO (Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machines.
ECMO is an advanced life support system used when a patient’s own heart or lungs cannot effectively perform their functions, essentially taking over the role of breathing and blood circulation. Doctors described it as “pumping blood from a large vein through an artificial lung outside the body, adding oxygen to the blood and removing waste carbon dioxide before returning the cleansed blood to the patient’s body near the heart.”
Porter’s condition reached such critical levels that he was placed in a coma for several days on ECMO support. The scenario was both harrowing and miraculous: “I was dead for three days,” Porter recalled, now referring to himself as a “walking miracle.” After waking up from this life-or-death struggle with the help of medical professionals who had performed invasive leg surgeries while he remained unconscious, Porter emerged not just alive but profoundly changed by his ordeal.
During a recent episode of the Outlaws with TS Madison podcast, Porter shared candid insights about his experience. “There were a couple of things I heard,” he said. “The first thing was to work smarter, not harder; the second, be obedient and answer the call; and finally, don’t ever stop telling the truth again.” These words seemed especially poignant as he reflected on his own trajectory: Porter had previously been considered an A-list figure but had silenced himself for fear of losing that status.
Porter’s journey from a high-profile Hollywood career to facing near-death experiences underscored the importance of perseverance and integrity in both personal and professional life. Now, having fully recovered, Porter remains deeply grateful for his health and inspired by his encounter with urosepsis, which has reshaped his outlook on living life with authenticity and resilience.
