Serbian police discovered the body of a man believed to be Aleksandar Nesovic, known as “Baja,” in a barrel on Thursday. The discovery was made following his shooting at a restaurant called “27” which led to the arrest of Belgrade’s police chief, Veselin Milic.
The incident occurred overnight between May 12 and 13 when one of the two other men involved in an argument with Nesovic fatally shot him. Prosecutors stated that Milic and three of his bodyguards helped the perpetrators after the murder.
An investigation was launched into 10 people over aggravated murder and other criminal offenses, including the restaurant owner. The body will undergo autopsy and DNA analysis to confirm identity. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed with 99.9 percent certainty that it is Nesovic based on clothing. He vowed that corrupt police officers involved in protecting criminals would have to leave their posts.
The case saw the seizure of evidence including 24 mobile phones, one fitness bracelet, two laptops and 10 vehicles. Milic was dismissed from his post after arrest and remanded in custody for 30 days following questioning.
