Border Agent Stands Off with Armed Human Trafficker Escaped from Detention

A US Border Patrol agent shot and wounded a human-trafficking suspect who fired on a federal government helicopter in Arizona on Tuesday. The suspect had escaped from a halfway house linked to a previous smuggling conviction and was in serious but stable condition after surgery, according to Pima County sheriff and FBI officials.

The incident occurred near the Mexican border amid heightened tensions following recent shootings by immigration officers, including two fatalities in Minnesota as part of President Donald Trump’s enforcement surge. The shooting took place in rural desert near Arivaca, a busy migrant crossing site with past tensions between advocates and Border Patrol.

FBI Special Agent Heith Janke identified the suspect as Patrick Gary Schlegel, 34, stating he was expected to be charged with assault on federal officers, alien smuggling, and possessing a firearm. “Any assault on law enforcement will not be tolerated,” Janke emphasized, adding that the FBI would continue its vigorous investigation.

Schlegel had been the subject of an arrest warrant for fleeing a Tucson halfway house on December 15th, according to federal court documents. Earlier in January 2024, he was sentenced to three years for transporting illegal aliens and firearms possession.

Border agents were pursuing Schlegel’s vehicle when several passengers got out and fled, allowing him to escape. The following day, Border Patrol spotted the same vehicle near Arivaca, where the suspect stopped on foot and fired at a Customs and Border Protection helicopter before fleeing. In an exchange of gunfire, the Border Patrol agent shot the suspect.

The incident follows two fatal shootings by Border Patrol agents in Minnesota: one of a 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti and another of a 37-year-old Renee Good earlier this month. Both deaths have generated significant political controversy, with Trump promising to increase deportations during his 2024 presidential campaign.

Since these incidents, immigration officers often wear tactical military-style gear, leading to protests in several cities, including Minneapolis, where deadly force has been employed by ICE agents against demonstrators. A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated decreasing public support for Trump’s enforcement tactics before and after the Pretti shooting, putting Republicans on the defensive ahead of November’s midterm elections.
