Boy George on Culture Club’s ‘Karma Chameleon’

British singer-songwriter Boy George reflects on how his band Culture Club’s hit song, ‘Karma Chameleon’, gained popularity four decades after it faced backlash upon its initial release.

Released in December 1983 under Epic Records, the song was recorded by George as an honor for his 65th birthday on June 14.

In a recent interview with People magazine, Boy George recalled how the band initially disliked ‘Karma Chameleon’. He stated, “The first time I sang it to the band, they all hated it.”

Despite this initial disdain from the band members, George insisted that the track be included in their album, Color by Numbers.

He was confident about its potential success, stating, “I knew that song was going to be a hit. I mean, I was absolutely adamant it was going to be No. 1, even though I really had no experience to base it on.”

Four decades later, ‘Karma Chameleon’ stands as a testament to Boy George’s foresight and determination.

The current version of the song uses in-studio vocals and “ethical technology” for its final recording, according to a press release.
