Brazil Rejects ‘New Cold War’ Threat Before Trump Meeting

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil has made it clear that his country does not wish for another Cold War with the United States. This sentiment was conveyed directly to U.S. President Donald Trump during a press conference held in New Delhi, India, at the conclusion of Lula’s visit there.

Lula’s statement came as part of an effort to mend fences after differing views on various international issues, including tariffs and geopolitics, emerged under Lula’s predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro. Both leaders have taken divergent stances from Trump in matters such as U.S. sanctions against Venezuela and Israel’s conflict with Gaza.

Lula plans a series of meetings during his trip to Washington this month, which are likely to cover trade relations, immigration policies, investment opportunities, and academic partnerships between Brazil’s universities and the United States. Despite recent remarks from the U.S. Supreme Court concerning tariffs levied by Trump, Lula expressed optimism about maintaining positive bilateral relations.

The Brazilian leader’s comments were delivered in New Delhi, India, as part of a three-day visit aimed at strengthening economic ties and fostering dialogue on regional and global challenges. While his agenda is broad, Lula’s relationship with the U.S. remains an important focus for both nations moving forward.
