Indian police have arrested a man for smuggling alcohol into Delhi using camels, seizing two animals and a large consignment of liquor. The operation took place on Monday, with the police statement released later that day.

The Delhi Police announced on Tuesday that 1,938 containers of illegal liquor were recovered from the camels. According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, authorities said the smuggler used forest routes to avoid checkpoints along highways between Faridabad and Delhi.

Five men are alleged to have used the animals for transporting liquor over a four-mile stretch at night. The rescued camels were handed over to concerned authorities and later taken to the Delhi Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter.

India faces significant issues with tainted liquor, as hundreds die annually from drinking cheap alcohol produced in backstreet distilleries. These bootleggers sell vast quantities without paying taxes, often adding methanol to increase potency, leading to blindness, liver damage, and death.
