China has unveiled its inaugural industry standard for embodied artificial intelligence (AI), marking a significant milestone anticipated to influence how next-generation AI systems are assessed, tested, and deployed. The announcement was made on Thursday by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) in collaboration with over 40 other institutions.
This new standard establishes a comprehensive framework for benchmarking and testing embodied AI systems, offering clear criteria for evaluating performance and capabilities. It encompasses core AI technologies, evaluation methodologies, system architectures, and capability requirements.
The standard is set to officially come into effect on June 1, 2026, following a February announcement by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that published a standard system framework for humanoid robots and embodied intelligence. These developments reflect China’s commitment to establishing technical foundations and industry norms in the rapidly evolving field of embodied AI.
Experts believe the new standard could expedite innovation while ensuring that AI systems adhere to consistent safety, performance, and interoperability benchmarks, potentially positioning China as a leader in the global embodied AI industry.
