China’s Military Announces Drills Amid Tensions

The Chinese military announced recent drills, including live-fire exercises in waters east of Luzon Island, as over 17,000 troops from US, Philippines, and allies commenced annual Balikatan military exercises. This move comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions due to China’s increased assertiveness in the South China Sea.

First-Time Involvement of Japanese Troops

For the first time, combat troops from Japan participated in the Balikatan drills amid ongoing strains between Tokyo and Beijing.

Details on Chinese Drills Remain Elusive

The Chinese military did not provide further details about the timing or exact location of the drills. However, it stated that its exercise is fully compliant with international law and practice.
