China Plans to Send Two More Pandas to US for Conservation Deal

China is set to loan two additional giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta as part of a decade-long conservation deal. The pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will be loaned ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing in mid-May.

This gesture comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and China over Iran’s conflict with the U.S. and ongoing trade disputes. Despite these issues, the move is seen as a cultural olive branch by some observers.

The arrangement aligns with Beijing’s longstanding ‘panda diplomacy’, which combines conservation efforts with soft power initiatives to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that cooperation on giant panda conservation will benefit both pandas and global biodiversity, while also fostering friendship between the Chinese and U.S. people.
