BEIJING (ISLAMABAD) – China has escalated its anti-corruption crusade by removing 19 senior officials, including military officers, from the national legislature ahead of next week’s high-profile annual political gathering in Beijing. The move comes as President Xi Jinping continues his sweeping campaign against graft.
The high-level meetings, set to take place from March 4 to 11, are expected to draw thousands of delegates and will outline China’s next five-year policy goals and economic targets for the coming year.
China’s top legislative body has confirmed that nine out of the 19 dismissed officials were military officers. The purge is part of President Xi Jinping’s relentless drive to safeguard the future of the ruling Communist Party. Since assuming power in 2013, Xi has branded corruption as the party’s greatest threat and launched a major crackdown targeting both high-ranking and low-level officials.
This strategy, known as “Tigers and Flies,” involves extensive investigations into both military and political figures. In October 2025, for instance, nine generals were removed from their posts due to violations of discipline and law, with the government emphasizing ongoing anti-corruption efforts within the armed forces.
While the public lauds President Xi’s commitment to eradicating corruption, some critics argue that his anti-graft campaign also serves as a means to sideline political opponents under the guise of fighting crime. As the nation prepares for the upcoming political summit, observers are closely watching how this latest wave of purges will shape China’s governance and internal politics.
The gathering in Beijing is expected to bring together thousands of delegates who represent various sectors of Chinese society. It will also feature discussions on a wide range of policy issues, including economic growth, social welfare, and international relations — all under the spotlight of President Xi’s ambitious plans for the nation’s future development.
