BEIJING (Reuters) – One Chinese citizen died in Tehran as a result of escalating conflicts between Iran and the United States and Israel, with more than 3,000 individuals evacuated from the conflict zone. The death toll includes one victim who tragically perished in the chaos.
The attacks by the US and Israeli forces against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei have prompted retaliatory strikes by Iranian forces on other Gulf countries hosting US military bases. Chinese embassies and consulates in neighboring regions are mobilizing to assist those affected, according to a ministry spokesperson named Mao Ning. She emphasized that China was not informed of the advance planning for these military actions against Iran.
Mao also refuted reports suggesting an imminent deal between Iran and China for acquiring supersonic anti-ship missiles, stating that China remains a responsible major power committed to fulfilling its international obligations. “We condemn the attacks as well as the killing of Khamenei,” Mao said, urging all parties involved to stop military action immediately to prevent further escalation.
At the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Jia Guide, China’s ambassador, condemned the unlawful actions against Iran and the death of its leader as violations of UN Charter principles and human rights. He underscored that the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of Gulf states must be upheld, with support for efforts to strengthen international dialogue among nations.
This conflict has thrust China into a delicate position between maintaining regional stability and upholding its commitments, reflecting complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Middle East.
