Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for a ceasefire in the Gulf region on Monday, emphasizing the importance of upholding the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Gulf nations. This call came after Iranian retaliatory strikes following US-Israeli military actions in the area. In a separate conversation with Bahrain’s foreign minister, Wang highlighted China’s commitment to playing a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
Earlier this week, China had voiced strong disapproval towards any attempt to influence Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was nominated by the Assembly of Experts. A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that all interventions in other countries’ internal affairs must be avoided on any pretext, and that Iran’s sovereignty should remain inviolate.
The call for a ceasefire demonstrates China’s proactive stance in the Gulf region. To further support this effort, Wang announced that China will dispatch a special envoy to the Middle East with the mandate of mediation. This move underscores Beijing’s commitment to mediating disputes and contributing to regional security, showing its growing influence within the international community.
