COAS Gen Asim Munir Promoted to Rank of Field Marshal

Pakistan’s federal cabinet has approved the promotion of Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, marking a rare elevation in the country’s military hierarchy.

Chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the cabinet’s decision was reached unanimously and was followed by a detailed briefing to President Asif Ali Zardari to ensure institutional coordination.

In a parallel move, the cabinet also agreed to extend the tenure of the Air Chief Marshal, signalling continuity at the highest levels of military leadership.

Field Marshal Munir, in a statement, expressed deep gratitude, dedicating the honour to the armed forces and the nation, particularly the families of martyrs and veterans. “This is not a personal accolade, but recognition of the collective sacrifice of the Pakistan Armed Forces,” he said, vowing to uphold the trust reposed in him.

The rare promotion underlines the administration’s confidence in Munir’s leadership and the symbolic weight the armed forces continue to carry in Pakistan’s national fabric.
