Colombian election results show Abelardo De La Espriella set to face leftist Ivan Cepeda in runoff. Initial voting data from national registry office shows De La Espriella with 43.7% and Cepeda just under 41%, a gap of 668,000 votes.
De La Espriella, a lawyer never before elected, draws comparisons to El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele. He proposes tough measures against illegal armed groups, construction of 10 megaprisons, and poverty reduction through education, healthcare, and housing for the poor.
Cepeda, a 63-year-old lawmaker and ally of sitting President Gustavo Petro, says he will wait for results to be formally reviewed by judges. Cepeda claims irregularities may have occurred at polling stations.
As of 8:15pm local time, about half of the results had been certified. De La Espriella rejects Cepeda’s hesitation to accept results, vowing to defend the homeland with reason or force.
Surveys suggest Cepeda will face a tougher contest in the second round once right-leaning voters have fewer candidates to choose from. About 58% of the 41 million eligible voters cast ballots on Sunday.
