In a chaotic incident during the 2026 BAFTA awards ceremony, John Davidson, whose speech had been met with racial slurs, spoke out about his experience in a subsequent interview with Vanity Fair. Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting the Best Visual Effects category when Davidson’s aggressive outburst took place.

Davidson lamented how they handled the situation at BAFTA, stating, “We did what we had to do.” However, reports in Variety indicated that the organization had taken cautious steps. Floor managers warned attendees sitting near him about potential outbursts due to his Tourette syndrome condition, a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations.

The activist withdrew from the audience after being present for I Swear – a film inspired by his life. Alan Cumming, who was hosting that night, managed the situation skillfully in response to Davidson’s series of outbursts during the event.

“John Davidson did not intend to be offensive with his language,” Cumming acknowledged in his address. “You may have noticed some strong language in the background. This can be part of how Tourette’s syndrome shows up for some people as the film explores that experience.”

Cumming extended his gratitude to the audience, saying, “Thanks for your understanding and helping create a respectful space for everyone.” He then proceeded to explain Davidson’s condition: “Tourette’s Syndrome is a disability. The tics you’ve heard tonight are involuntary, meaning John has no control over their language. We apologize if anyone feels offended by what we heard.”

Davidson was eventually removed from the audience but had already spoken candidly about his Tourette syndrome and the challenges it presented during an interview with Vanity Fair. He described how he sought support for his condition through a foundation and emphasized that he often felt ostracized or misunderstood despite making significant contributions to society.
