Dubai authorities clamp down amid Iran unrest, influencers back government

Dubai’s image as a bastion of safety is under severe strain amidst Iran’s relentless onslaught, with local influencers rallying to support authorities in an attempt to preserve the city’s reputation. For decades, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has marketed itself as the safest country in the world, boasting extremely low crime rates and attracting millions of visitors annually.

The current conflict has shattered this tranquil facade. Tehran has launched over 1,800 missiles and drones at the UAE, predominantly targeting Dubai, where these strikes have been met by the city’s sophisticated air defense systems intercepting a significant majority of them.

Local influencers, particularly those like Ebraheem Alsamadi from “Dubai Bling,” are playing a pivotal role in reinforcing this narrative. In a video broadcast to his 5.8 million followers on Instagram, Alsamadi emphatically declared his commitment to staying in the UAE despite American consular advisories and reiterated that it was “the safest country in the world.” He emphasized, “This has been my home for the past sixteen years, and I’m not going anywhere.”

Authorities are doubling down with their messaging, aware of the war’s potential long-term impact on Dubai’s global reputation and economy. The UAE government shared a heartfelt emotional song on its Instagram account affirming that “Dubai is safe, will always be safe.” Such efforts underscore the importance of maintaining this safety narrative amidst escalating tensions.

Safety has been integral to Dubai’s identity for decades, now under scrutiny. Government strategists are grappling with how to adapt their public relations strategy in light of these new realities but choose not to deviate from long-held messaging until circumstances necessitate change. Analysts such as Ryan Bohl, a geopolitical expert at Rane Network, suggest that “deferring to habits” may be the wisest course of action for now.

Dubai’s economy heavily relies on foreign labor, which contributes significantly to diversifying its industries away from oil towards tourism and services. The UAE Attorney General has already acted swiftly by arresting individuals involved in publishing misleading content or intercepting footage; these measures aim to safeguard public order and maintain the reputation of the nation amidst conflict.

While efforts are made to preserve this image, they also come with challenges. Western media coverage of arrests within the country has sparked backlash from some audiences accustomed to freedom of expression. For instance, Emaar warned against closure or reduced operations for shops during wartime, emphasizing their role in maintaining public order and national pride.

As Iran’s threats continue and international tourists flee under threat, officials are quick to reinforce an image of normalcy by prohibiting sharing of sensitive information online. Authorities in Qatar have taken similar steps by arresting over 300 individuals suspected of publishing such content. This strategy faces criticism for potentially backfiring on Westerners and others from democracies who expect freedom.

For the UAE’s economy, particularly Dubai’s standing as a hub for investments, ensuring stability during this period becomes paramount. Should significant foreign investors lose confidence in Dubai, it could severely impact diversification plans towards infrastructure, technology, real estate sectors, among others.
