Elon Musk announced plans for a massive semiconductor plant called the Terafab in Austin, Texas. The facility will produce chips for Tesla vehicles, SpaceX spaceships, and Optimus humanoid robots. Currently, these companies rely on Samsung for their chip needs.
Musk outlined his vision for the Terafab during a presentation, stating it’s not just about electric cars or robots but transforming humanity into “a galactic civilization.” The plant will be jointly built by xAI, SpaceX, and Tesla businesses.
The Terafab is expected to produce 1 terawatt of chip output annually, more than all current semiconductor manufacturers combined. It will create a fast recursive loop for improving chip design, focusing on producing high-power chips for space and general use.
Musk envisions the Terafab playing a crucial role in advancing robotics, AI, and space travel. He expects Tesla to produce 10 to 100 times as many Optimus robots as electric vehicles by 2027, with potential production reaching 10 billion robots annually.
Experts project strong demand for humanoid robots in the coming years, with Barclays forecasting the market could grow from $2-3 billion today to over $200 billion by 2035. The Terafab’s chips will power solar-powered AI satellites and enable electromagnetic drivers on the moon operated by Optimus robots and humans. This could lead to a future where interplanetary travel is free, and anyone can have access to space.
