BARCELONA — FC Barcelona has officially withdrawn from the controversial European Super League project, leaving Real Madrid as the only major club still committed to the initiative. The Spanish giants’ decision marks a significant shift in their stance following earlier hints that they were readying for UEFA’s existing competition framework.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta had previously signaled a policy change, voicing support for returning to European football’s governing structure and urging other clubs to do the same. His January statement was seen as a stark departure from the club’s earlier backing of the Super League concept.
Launched in 2021 as an ambitious plan to reshape elite European club football, the Super League aimed to create a competition dominated by the continent’s wealthiest and most powerful clubs. However, its launch sparked unprecedented backlash across Europe. Fans staged protests, governments expressed concerns, and UEFA, along with domestic leagues, strongly opposed the idea.
Several founding clubs withdrew within days of the proposal’s announcement in July 2023, leading to a swift collapse of the project. Juventus was among those to exit, followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid as the last two active supporters among the original core group, which included three Spanish, three Italian, and six English clubs.
The initial Super League concept proposed a competition featuring 24 teams across four tiers, with plans to expand in December 2024 under a revised format called the “Unify League,” promising an 96-team competition divided into four tiers. Yet, this new model also faced strong resistance from major leagues such as LaLiga and the English Premier League.
With Barcelona’s withdrawal, Real Madrid remains the sole prominent advocate of the breakaway model and continues to push for its implementation while seeking compensation from UEFA over the original proposal’s blocking.
