Female Drug Addiction Grows in Silence Amid Rising Awareness

Female drug addiction remains a largely hidden crisis despite growing awareness of women’s rights and related health issues. Dr Shamsher Hayat, CEO of Hayat Rehab Clinic and clinical psychologist, highlights this issue.

Many women suffer in silence due to stigma and shame surrounding their condition. Families avoid seeking help for fear of judgment, leading to phone consultations replacing real care, which exacerbates the situation.

Women often fear backlash from families and communities when seeking treatment, deterring them from getting help. Unlike male addicts who may find more accessible options, women frequently face silence and shame, resulting in a dangerous lack of gender-sensitive support systems.

A growing number of school and university girls are falling into addiction due to peer pressure, neglect, or academic stress. Addiction is often linked to deeper mental health issues like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder, requiring holistic care, detox, therapy, and emotional healing.
