Five Dead in Western Austria Avalanches, Including One American

At least five individuals fell victim to a series of avalanches in western Austria on Saturday, underscoring the precarious conditions gripping the area. Authorities from the Tyrol region highlighted that intense snowfall over the previous week had culminated in up to 5 feet of accumulation. Combined with gusty winds and a weak snowpack, these elements were particularly susceptible to avalanche activity.

In the St. Anton am Arlberg district of Tyrol, nearly 490 yards-wide avalanche engulfed five off-piste skiers on Friday afternoon at an elevation of approximately 6,500 feet. An American and a Pole emerged as the two confirmed victims from this incident, with a 21-year-old Austrian losing their life after being transported to hospital.

Tyrol police further stated that they have deployed dozens of personnel including mountain-rescue teams, ambulance crews, fire department staff, and several dog squads for the rescue operations. In Nauders-Bergkastell, southeast from St. Anton am Arlberg, a 42-year-old German man along with his 16-year-old son survived an avalanche but tragically lost his father to injuries.

In the neighboring region of Vorarlberg, a 39-year-old Swiss snowboarder was felled by an avalanche in off-piste terrain. The local police confirmed his death.

Tyrol Governor Anton Mute expressed his anguish over the recent influx of visitors venturing into off-piste areas despite the avalanche risks. “The recent snowfall has drawn numerous people to our mountains,” he stated in a statement, adding that nearly three dozen avalanche incidents were reported on Friday alone, out of more than 200 occurrences during the last week.

His office added that over a month, avalanches had already claimed ten lives—eight skiers from two separate events. The governor’s office warned residents to expect no reprieve as the turbulent weather conditions persist into Sunday.
