Senior cricket figures, including India’s legendary Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, joined a group of former international captains on Tuesday in voicing their concerns for Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The 73-year-old is currently incarcerated since August 2023 after being convicted in various cases that he asserts were politically motivated following his removal from office last year.
Imran has been under house arrest due to health issues, which have worsened over the past two and a half years. His right eye experienced significant swelling while he was detained, leading to his vision deteriorating significantly. Recently, a medical board found progress in his condition, with reduced swelling and an improvement in his sight.
The former cricket captains — including Gavaskar, Dev, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Mike Brearley, David Gower, Clive Lloyd, and John Wright — signed a petition expressing deep concern for Imran’s treatment. In the statement, they highlighted his contributions to cricket as one of its finest all-rounders and their shared history playing alongside him.
The former players wrote: “Many of us competed against him, shared the field with him, or grew up idolizing his all-round brilliance, charisma, and competitive spirit.” They emphasized how a person of Imran Khan’s stature should be treated with dignity and basic human consideration, aligning with what one would expect from a global sporting icon. As fellow cricketers who understand fair play, honour, and respect that transcends the boundary rope, they urged the Pakistan government to ensure immediate and adequate medical attention for him.
The petition also stressed that “rivalry ends when the stumps are drawn — and respect endures.” Imran Khan embodied this spirit throughout his career. The PTI issued a statement on its X account, appreciating the international cricketers’ voices raised against injustices being inflicted upon the former Prime Minister. They hoped that cricket players worldwide would extend their support until justice is achieved.
“The party also called for current and veteran cricketers around the globe to speak in favour of the incarcerated leader,” PTI added. “One of cricket’s greatest legends is currently languishing in prison as a victim of a political vendetta and injustice, where he is being deprived of basic human rights and essential medical facilities.”
The cricketing community has previously expressed their concern over Imran Khan’s health issues. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram described it as “heartbreaking” to learn that the former Prime Minister was facing health challenges. Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said he was “deeply saddened” at hearing about Imran losing vision in his eye.
The cricketers’ efforts are part of a broader appeal for justice and fair treatment for Imran Khan, demonstrating how camaraderie among sportspeople transcends political borders and nationalities.
