FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh Discusses Trade Hurdles Resolution with Member Customs Operations

Karachi: Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of , met with Syed Shakil Shah, Member Customs (Operations) to discuss significant issues in the customs department. The meeting aimed at discussing mutual interests and presenting recommendations for reforming customs operations while addressing business community’s problems.

Sheikh emphasized on efficient border and port management for economic growth as trade & industry heavily relies on seamless customs operations. He appreciated faceless system and pre-arrival clearance measures implemented by Customs.

Shah assured of full cooperation from the department, particularly in upgrading customs laboratory, resolving grievances related to complaint management system, and utilizing alternative dispute resolution committees (ADRC).

‘s Saquib Fayyaz Magoon highlighted daily operational challenges faced by importers and exporters including valuation disputes, clearance delays, and procedural anomalies. He urged for a more transparent, fast-tracked, and digitalized mechanism.

Magoon questioned the delay in upgrading customs laboratory despite sufficient funds and technical human resources available. He proposed establishment of an international caliber lab to reduce unnecessary costs and delays.

Asif Sakhi pointed out inefficiencies due to lack of ADRCs, particularly for SMEs, leading to costly litigation and loss of liquidity. Aman Paracha stressed the need for modernized, predictable customs procedures supportive of SMEs and prevention of goods confiscation on mere suspicion of smuggling.
