France and India Plan Joint Production of Rafale Jets

France and India are deepening their defense partnership with ambitious plans for joint production of Rafale fighter jets, helicopters, and submarines, as President Emmanuel Macron announced during his recent visit. This move comes on the heels of India’s new order for another 114 Rafales from Dassault Aviation, estimated to cost $35.65 billion, with up to 90 of these aircraft potentially produced in India through a joint venture.

Macron highlighted that co-production was crucial for both sides: “Rafale is absolutely key,” he stated. The Defense Acquisition Council of India had already given preliminary approval for acquiring 114 more Rafales along with other planes and missiles, following the deadliest border skirmishes between India and Pakistan in decades.

The Indian navy currently operates six French Scorpene submarines; Macron and Modi unveiled plans to produce additional H125 helicopters by a joint venture of Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems, as well as launch a missile collaboration project with Safran and Bharat Electronics. These developments underscore the strategic importance of Rafale jets in India’s air force, particularly during last year’s conflict where six Indian aircraft were downed, including three Rafales.

Meanwhile, Trump brokered peace between India and Pakistan, but not without criticism. He initially credited seven downed aircraft to both sides; however, his count later rose to eight, then ten, with today’s news confirming that a total of 11 French jets were lost in the conflict. These figures highlight the intense nature of military engagements involving advanced combat systems like Rafale.

As Macron and Modi continued their diplomatic efforts, India demonstrated its commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities, aiming not only for technological advancements but also for greater self-sufficiency through joint ventures with local firms. This partnership is pivotal as it extends beyond mere imports, fostering a symbiotic relationship that benefits both nations.
