French actors and filmmakers warn AI is ‘plundering’ industry ahead of Oscars

In the days leading up to France’s prestigious Cesar Awards, a powerful op-ed co-signed by thousands of French actors and filmmakers has sparked a national conversation about AI’s encroachment on their industry. Signatories included luminaries like Franck Dubosc, Elodie Bouchez, and Swann Arlaud, who penned an impassioned plea in Le Parisien, warning that AI is rapidly transforming the artistic landscape.

The op-ed warns of the “profound upheaval” facing French cinema with the advent of artificial intelligence. They argue that while AI has certain merits, its impact as a “devouring hydra” on artists’ careers is catastrophic. Notably, it cites instances like “unauthorised voice cloning,” which has infiltrated every corner of the industry.

The op-ed’s authors highlight how even lesser-known artists are struggling to navigate this new reality. They express concern that many cannot afford to refuse contracts involving their voices, given the risks associated with losing their image and future opportunities. The piece criticizes what they view as an “organised plundering” occurring in real time.

The authors demand a clear legal framework to ensure AI coexists harmoniously with artistic work, safeguarding copyright and related rights. In response to this growing threat, various initiatives have been launched by the French film industry. Just recently, eight renowned voice actors sent formal notices to two US companies guilty of unauthorized cloning without consent.

Simultaneously, street protests in Paris—under the slogan “Touche pas à ma VF” (Hands off my French dub)—have brought public attention to the issue. The debate transcends national borders; Hollywood heavyweights have also raised their voices against AI-generated content mimicking celebrities’ likenesses, such as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, which went viral last week.

The conversation about balancing innovation with artist protection is far from over in the face of these rapid technological changes sweeping across multiple industries.
