Germany Eliminated by Paraguay in World Cup 4-3 Penalty Shootout

Germany’s World Cup journey ended in the last 32 after they were defeated by Paraguay on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Foxborough. This is the first time that Germany has lost a penalty shootout at a World Cup.

Julio Enciso scored for Paraguay in the first half, but Kai Havertz equalized for Germany in the 54th minute with his third goal of the tournament. A VAR review disallowed Jonathan Tah’s goal in extra time, leading to a nail-biting penalty shootout where Paraguay emerged victorious as Jose Canale scored the winning kick.

This was Germany’s first knockout-stage appearance since their 2014 World Cup victory. Paraguay celebrated what could be considered their greatest win at the tournament but face an uphill battle against France should they advance in the competition.

Deniz Undav made his debut for Paraguay, scoring three goals in the opening two matches as a substitute. Julian Nagelsmann started him and replaced Jamal Musiala, while Nathaniel Brown returned to left-back after missing the Ecuador match due to a minor injury.

Miguel Almiron was recalled by Paraguay following a one-match ban for becoming the first player to be sent off under new FIFA rules for covering his mouth during an on-field confrontation.
