Ghana’s Semenyo Defies Rejection, Joins World Cup Dream at Manchester City

Antoine Semenyo is gearing up for his second World Cup with Ghana as an established Premier League forward. His journey to becoming a professional footballer was fraught with challenges and rejections.

After failing to qualify for the recent Africa Cup of Nations, Semenyo joined Manchester City after being triggered from Bournemouth in January for £65 million. The move bypassed competition from Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham.

Semenyo’s rapid ascent has been marked by significant moments, including a standout goal against Chelsea during the FA Cup final at Wembley. Despite living his entire life in England, Semenyo firmly identified with representing Ghana.

His character and resilience were evident even when he faced rejection from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, and Millwall. His father Larry played in the Ghanaian top flight, while his brother Jai is at Lorient.

Semenyo’s perseverance paid off as he broke into the professional ranks after studying sports science. He made his debut for Ghana in June 2022 before moving to the Premier League under Andoni Iraola and Pep Guardiola.

Reflecting on his journey, Semenyo expressed gratitude and disbelief at reaching this stage, acknowledging that his best years are yet ahead.
