Google Maps Gemini AI Now Assists Walkers and Cyclists with Voice Navigation

Google has expanded the reach of its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant in Google Maps to include voice-based support for people walking and cycling. This update builds on the initial launch in November 2025 when Google introduced a hands-free, conversational navigation helper for drivers.

In the latest version, users can activate Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the microphone or Gemini icon during an active navigation session. For walkers, they can ask about neighborhoods, attractions, restaurants with specific amenities, and get relevant information from Maps data. Cyclists can also query things like ETA, upcoming events, and dictate messages to contacts without touching their device.

Google aims to make navigation safer and more convenient by reducing the need for typing or swiping screens while in motion. Users can follow up on queries naturally, such as first asking about vegan restaurants along a route and then finding nearby parking options. Beyond simple directions, Gemini can suggest points of interest and offer context-aware insights. It also integrates with phone services to complete tasks like sending text messages, checking schedules, or adding stops to a trip via voice.

The feature is now available globally on Android and iOS devices wherever Gemini is supported. iOS users have immediate access, while Android support continues to expand. The feature is not yet available on the web version of Google Maps. This enhancement represents part of Google’s broader effort to embed Gemini across its products and transform Maps from a static directions tool into a real-time, conversational travel assistant that responds to natural language and adapts to user needs.
