ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar emphasized during the Japan-Pakistan Business Seminar 2026 that Islamabad was committed to fostering an enabling environment for long-term investment. This commitment came as a reassurance to Japanese automobile manufacturers, who had expressed concerns about sustaining cooperation in the sector.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Akhtar affirmed, “Pakistan is listening, and Pakistan is acting.” He pledged that all issues raised by Japanese firms would be addressed “in partnership with stakeholders,” ensuring continued mutual benefit between Japan and Pakistan’s automotive industry.
The meeting brought together government officials, business leaders, universities, and representatives from the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Pakistan, as well as the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japan External Trade Organisation. Mr. Akhtar highlighted that the automotive sector was one of the most visible and impactful areas for economic cooperation between Japan and Pakistan.
“Japanese automakers have played a central role in shaping Pakistan’s industrial landscape,” he noted. Companies such as Toyota, Suzuki, and Honda had been operating in the country for decades, not only contributing to vehicle production but also supporting local supply chains through parts manufacturing, logistics, dealership networks, and service centers.
However, Mr. Akhtar acknowledged that recent engagements with Japanese automakers highlighted concerns over tax refunds and export-related hurdles. He underlined the need for continuous dialogue and streamlined processes to support long-term growth in this vital sector.
“We are committed to addressing these concerns in partnership with stakeholders,” Mr. Akhtar declared, “ensuring that Japan’s industrial participation in Pakistan remains robust, competitive, and mutually beneficial.”
Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, Akamatsu Shuichi, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the substantial contribution of Japanese automotive companies. He stated, “Japanese automotive companies have created more than 100,000 jobs in Pakistan and have established domestic supply chains for localizing automotive components.”
These efforts underscored a strategic partnership aimed at fostering industrial growth while maintaining robust cooperation for mutual prosperity.
