Mexican authorities reported at least 10 people killed in an attack by gunmen in Tehuitzingo, east-central Puebla. The victims included six men, three women, and a child, all shot early Sunday. Federal officials are investigating the case.
Of the 10 victims, six were family members, while the other four were workers, according to Puebla state prosecutor Idamis Pastor. Nine died at the scene from gunshot wounds; one woman died en route to hospital. The motive remains unclear.
Soldiers, National Guard, and police officers deployed to the area as security agency vowed to maintain order and social peace in the state. Local authorities did not identify suspects.
In February, six people were killed in Huehuetlán El Grande, another Puebla city. Days later, three died in Puebla’s capital after their vehicle was attacked. Governor Alejandro Armenta has yet to comment on the incident as Mexico prepares for World Cup co-hosting next month.
Central Mexico has seen a surge in cartel violence recently, forcing 800-1,000 families from homes. Puebla has experienced brutal violence in recent years, including last August’s discovery of six severed heads along a road and this year finding seven bodies with five decapitated and one completely dismembered on an expressway.
