Italy Introduces Smart Electronic Bracelets for Elderly

Amid the global heatwave, Italy introduces electronic bracelets to monitor body temperature during hot weather. These devices are part of a €400 million support scheme for the elderly, funded by Rome’s municipality with EU post-COVID funding.

Social workers remotely track heart rate and sleep patterns through these bracelets, which also allow users to call for help in emergencies. The device is seen as a key health prevention tool during Europe’s ongoing heatwave, where temperatures in Rome climbed into the upper 30s degrees Celsius.

A clinical psychologist emphasizes that the bracelet is crucial for elderly people during hot periods due to their lower blood pressure and heart rates. The black plastic bracelet includes motion sensors to detect accidental falls and constantly tracks body movements throughout the day.

Paris health officials confirmed over a thousand more deaths than expected during Europe’s sweltering conditions, with 85 percent of deaths being among those aged 65 and over. Red alerts for heat have been issued in several European regions, including the UK, where temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius this week. Authorities advise people to stay hydrated, keep their environments cool, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during extreme heat.
