Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) has mandated a mandatory three-credit-hour AI course for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, effective from the Fall 2026 academic session. This directive comes at a time when the educational and technological landscape globally is rapidly evolving with artificial intelligence at its core.

In their letter to vice chancellors and university heads, HEC’s Executive Director emphasized that AI education no longer serves as an optional benefit but as a vital necessity for students. The director highlighted the importance of equipping learners with digital literacy, ethical responsibility regarding data privacy, transparency in AI applications, and understanding the social impacts of technological advancements.

The letter was clear that universities could incorporate the AI course through various means: electives, interdisciplinary subjects, or alongside existing courses. A fundamental focus would be placed on basic AI concepts, practical applications across diverse sectors like healthcare, economy, and governance, along with ethical considerations such as fairness and accountability. Universities were allowed flexibility to customize their offerings based on program nature.

This move by HEC signals a significant shift towards integrating AI into the fabric of Pakistan’s educational system, aligning with international standards in an area poised for rapid growth and transformation.
