The Indian Air Force (IAF) reported today that one of its fighter jets had crashed in northeastern Assam state. The Su-30MKI was involved in a training mission when it went down near Karbi Anglong approximately 60 kilometers from Jorhat, which is just outside the region.

Search operations are underway to locate any survivors or find out what happened to the aircraft. This marks the IAF’s latest incident involving an overdue jet following recent mishaps. The Su-30MKI had been dispatched for training purposes but failed to return as expected, with last contact reported at 7:42 PM local time on Thursday.

The IAF’s account of the crash comes shortly after another event: a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Tejas light combat aircraft vanished without communication from Assam. The Tejas crashed during its takeoff attempt from an airbase, suffering severe damage to its structure and resulting in the loss of the pilot.

This incident follows similar past events where IAF fighter jets have met with misfortune. Just over a decade ago, another Tejas plane crashed during a public demonstration at the Dubai Air Show, leaving behind a dramatic scene: a burst of fire and thick black smoke rising from the impact site as it hit the ground.

The ongoing search for answers to this latest crash is expected to provide more insight into recent IAF air mishaps. The Indian military’s ability to manage and recover such critical assets will be crucial in understanding these recurring incidents, and how they can prevent future accidents.
