Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the imminent establishment of a mutually beneficial free trade agreement with Israel following his recent two-day visit aimed at deepening ties. During his press conference in Jerusalem, Modi emphasized that there is “no place for terrorism” anywhere in the world and pledged India’s steadfast opposition to it alongside Israeli leaders.

The meeting between Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led to a series of agreements covering economic, security, and diplomatic areas, according to Netanyahu’s office. In separate remarks on social media, Indian President Isaac Herzog highlighted the “extremely fruitful” discussions with his Israeli counterpart and expressed enthusiasm for future collaboration in sectors like technology and innovation.

In addition to endorsing India-Israel ties, Herzog also reaffirmed Modi’s statement that the people of both nations are stronger together. The prime ministers jointly addressed Israel’s parliament during Modi’s visit, reiterating their commitment to maintaining firm support for Israel amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

India currently conducts $3.62 billion in merchandise trade with Israel annually. During his arrival in Israel on Wednesday, Modi faced criticism at home over the potential economic benefits of an FTA and the Israeli response to the recent offensive in Gaza. Despite not explicitly mentioning deaths in the region, Modi did stress India’s commitment to efforts that foster a “durable peace” and regional stability.

Days before his trip, Netanyahu had previously identified countries including India as part of a broader group of allies combating “radical axes” aligned with Muslim nations. The upcoming free trade agreement is expected to significantly bolster economic ties between the two nations, aligning them further in their stances on terrorism and peace negotiations.
