IOC Says Infantino’s Board of Peace Attendance Doesn’t Break Political Neutrality Rules

FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s recent attendance at a meeting of the Board of Peace alongside United States President Donald Trump sparked controversy but was clarified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). During this gathering, which centers on reconstruction efforts in Gaza, Infantino highlighted his support for comprehensive sport recovery initiatives through football.

The IOC’s spokesperson explained that FIFA is aligning with its mandate to promote sports development. The Board of Peace meeting has been a contentious affair, especially given its absence of Palestinian representation and Trump’s suggestion it could tackle broader global challenges beyond Gaza. Yet, the IOC maintains that Infantino’s participation fits within FIFA’s guidelines on political neutrality.

Infantino’s presence at the event was notable for his close association with Trump, who donned a red hat emblazoned with ‘USA’ and the numbers 45-47, symbolizing Trump’s two presidencies. The Board of Peace also unveiled a collaboration agreement between FIFA and the Board, which includes constructing 50 mini-pitches near schools and residential areas in Gaza, five full-size football pitches across various districts, as well as building a state-of-the-art FIFA academy.

Infantino’s involvement underscores FIFA’s commitment to supporting sport development. Interestingly, Trump was also awarded FIFA’s inaugural peace prize for his diplomatic efforts during the year prior. This prestigious recognition further highlights the connection between these entities, even as concerns about potential influence over global diplomacy persist.

The Board of Peace meeting is not without its critics; its composition lacks Palestinian representatives and has raised questions about its authority within UN frameworks. Despite such controversies, FIFA appears to be committed to advancing sports in Gaza through initiatives like those outlined in the collaboration agreement with the Board of Peace.

Meanwhile, as co-hosts of this summer’s soccer World Cup along with Mexico and Canada, the United States continues to engage closely with both organizations, reinforcing ties that are crucial for global sports governance. Trump’s association with Infantino has generated significant attention within the athletic community, underscoring their close partnership despite differing stances on international diplomacy.
