Iran Grants Women Official Permission to Ride Motorcycles, Obtain Driving Licenses

Iran has officially allowed women to ride motorcycles and obtain driving licenses for two-wheelers. This decision is being hailed as a significant step forward for women’s mobility and civil rights in the country.

Previously, there was no explicit legal prohibition on women riding motorcycles or scooters, but authorities often refrained from issuing licenses to female applicants in practice. This led to years of legal ambiguity regarding women operating motorcycles, resulting in complications and liabilities in case of traffic accidents.

Reports indicate that this legal gap often hindered the mobility of women who wished to use motorcycles for commuting or transportation purposes. The new regulation was signed by Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref yesterday. It has been approved by the Iranian Cabinet at the end of last month.

Under the new rules, traffic police are required to provide practical motorcycle training to female applicants, conduct driving tests under supervision, and issue official licenses to successful candidates.
