According to US officials speaking to CBS News, an Israeli missile has struck Iran, leading to explosions heard in the central province of Isfahan and the suspension of flights over several Iranian cities.

Iranian media reported explosions, but an Iranian official told Reuters those were caused by air defense systems. State media said three drones over the central city of Isfahan had been shot down.

The strike comes amid heightened tensions, with Iran on high alert following Israel’s announcement of retaliation for an Iranian attack against it on Saturday night.

In its first direct assault on Israel, Iran launched over 300 drones and missiles, most of which were intercepted by Israeli air defenses with support from allies like the US and UK.

While Iranian media has not reported any direct impacts and has assured the safety of nuclear facilities, explosions have been reported near Isfahan international airport and an army base in Isfahan city, prompting activation of local air defense systems.

Isfahan province houses crucial military installations, including a major airbase, missile production complex, and nuclear sites.

Recent warnings from Iranian leaders of swift responses to Israeli attacks have escalated tensions further, despite international calls for restraint and attempts to de-escalate the crisis.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the dangerous escalation between Israel and Iran, warning of the potential for a devastating regional conflict if miscalculations or mistakes occur.
