Jewish school damaged by overnight explosion in Amsterdam

A school in Amsterdam has been damaged by an overnight explosion that targeted its exterior wall. Mayor Femke Halsema denounced the act as a “cowardly act of aggression” during a Saturday statement, urging police to investigate thoroughly. CCTV footage shows someone leaving behind the explosive device used.

There were no injuries reported but Halsema described the damage as limited. She stated that Amsterdam must be a place where Jews can live safely and emphasized how important it is for schools to provide environments free from threats of violence.

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Zeiten condemned the incident on social media, asserting that antisemitism has no place in his country. He added, “It must always feel safe in our country” as he expressed understanding of the anger and fear provoked by these events.

The attack follows a series of nighttime attacks on synagogues this week. In Belgium’s Liege, an explosion shook a synagogue before dawn, causing slight damage but no casualties. The incident sparked strong condemnation from Belgian politicians and European officials.

In Rotterdam, another synagogue was targeted the same night with a car ramming act that started a fire. Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, identified as a suspect, died of self-inflicted injuries on Friday after being detained by authorities. Information indicated his relatives were killed in Israeli strikes against Lebanon.

As tensions escalate, there’s been an increased demand for security services specifically focusing on Jewish protection across the country. In particular, officers are stationed at schools and educational institutions to ensure their safety amid rising threats against the community.

The recent incidents highlight how far-reaching conflicts like the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran have become, touching not just military theaters but also civilian spaces where religious minorities seek refuge in safety.
