Junaid Inaugurates Ferry Terminal at Karachi Port Trust

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Thursday inaugurated a ferry terminal at the Karachi Port Trust, calling the project a milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to expand coastal tourism and strengthen its blue economy. Speaking at the ceremony, the minister said the terminal marked the realization of a long-held plan to introduce modern, safe, and sustainable maritime passenger transport in the country.

Ferry services are expected to begin later this month as part of a broader strategy to diversify maritime-related economic activity. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of tapping Pakistan’s underutilized maritime potential. He described the service as more than a transportation project, framing it as a platform for economic growth, tourism development, and regional connectivity. “This ferry service is not just a transport initiative but a gateway to economic opportunities,” the minister said, noting that it represents the first ferry service license ever issued in Pakistan’s history.

Government officials stated that the launch aims to boost investor confidence and signal a more supportive environment for private sector participation in the maritime sector. Chaudhry said the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and its affiliated port authorities were pursuing policy reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and public-private partnerships to expand the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

The minister also pointed to growing interest from private investors, revealing that several businessmen have expressed intent to seek licenses to operate ferry services. Chaudhry invited proposals for new commercial ventures linked to Pakistan’s ports, assuring investors of government support and facilitation. He further announced that the Port Qasim Authority would soon present plans for a modern industrial zone designed to attract investment and enhance export-oriented manufacturing. The proposed zone would complement port-led development and contribute to long-term economic growth.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Karachi Port Trust, and representatives of the shipping and business community attended the ceremony. Participants described the ferry terminal as a significant step toward revitalizing Pakistan’s maritime sector and unlocking the country’s coastal potential.
