Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, January 6, 2025, ending his nine-year tenure as the country’s leader and head of the Liberal Party of Canada.

In a press conference outside his residence at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Trudeau addressed rising opposition within his party. “I have informed my party and the Governor that I intend to resign as leader of the party as well as prime minister of Canada, and will do so as soon as my successor is appointed through a robust nationwide competitive process,” he said.

Trudeau, 53, stated that he would remain in office until a new party leader is selected. He also prorogued Parliament until March 24 to facilitate the transition process.

Taking office in November 2015, Trudeau is among Canada’s longest-serving prime ministers. While initially lauded for steering the country toward progressive policies, his approval ratings have declined in recent years due to inflation, a housing crisis, and rising immigration.
