Karachi Metropolitan Medical and Dental College (KMDC) has officially been granted university status, marking a transformative development for the institution. The Karachi Metropolitan University Bill received approval in the Sindh Assembly, leading to the issuance of a gazette notification that elevates KMDC to Karachi Metropolitan University.
Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, hailed the achievement as the fulfillment of a promise to the residents of the Central District. He emphasized the increased importance of the institution following its upgrade to a university. Mayor Wahab expressed a strong commitment to tirelessly work towards the enhancement of Karachi Metropolitan University.
It’s worth noting that in 2022, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) opposed the Sindh government’s decision, considering it an attempt by the ruling PPP to “occupy” urban resources and undermine local government administration. Despite opposition, the Sindh Assembly forwarded the Karachi Metropolitan University Bill to the standing committee for further deliberation, leading to the recent official recognition of KMDC as a university.
