Lahore High Court raises legal and constitutional questions on Rashid’s Umrah case

A division bench of the Lahore High Court has addressed critical legal and constitutional issues in its hearing concerning a former interior minister’s Umrah travel. The bench, comprising Justice Jawad Hassan and Justice Tariq Mahmood Bajwa, summoned key government officials including the federal interior secretary and director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to appear personally on March 5.

During the proceedings, the bench dismissed a request by the petitioner seeking an immediate suspension of the single bench order allowing Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s Umrah travel. The court observed that its decision on the matter would be deferred until the next scheduled hearing.

The division bench heard arguments presented by Sheikh Rashid and his legal team, Sardar Abdul Razzaq and Sardar Shahbaz. At the start of proceedings, Justice Jawad Hassan inquired about who gave consent for the petitioner’s Umrah travel when it was approved by the single bench, and under whose authority the appeal had been filed.

The division bench also directed that Sheikh Rashid should attend court personally, along with his legal team. These developments have significant implications for the ongoing intra-court appeal and further action against the former minister regarding potential misuse of government resources in approving travel to Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia for religious purposes.
