Libya Red Crescent Reports 17 Migrants Dead After Boat Breakdown
The Libyan National Army’s naval forces and coast guards, along with Red Crescent volunteers, rescued seven survivors from a boat that broke down in the Mediterranean Sea off Tobruk city. The incident occurred near the border of Egypt.
According to security sources, the bodies of nine migrants are expected to wash ashore within days. Pictures posted by the Red Crescent show the remains placed in black plastic bags and loaded into vehicles.
In another case, four members of a criminal gang were sentenced to up to 22 years in prison for human trafficking, abductions for ransom, and torture. The Public Prosecutor’s Office also ordered the arrest of another gang involved in sending migrants on a dilapidated boat that capsized, resulting in the deaths of 38 nationals from Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
