Libyan prosecutors identify three suspects in killing of Gaddafi son

Libyan prosecutors announced on Thursday that they had identified three suspects involved in the killing of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi last month. The son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was found dead at his home in Zintan, a northwest city, early in February.

The prosecutor’s office revealed details of the investigation: “We have determined the meeting place of the suspects, the exact time they arrived on the scene, and committed the crime. Furthermore, we have identified three individuals as prime suspects.” The office added that these persons were ordered to be arrested forthwith via a Facebook post.

Seif al-Islam held no official position during his father’s rule but was known for his portrayal of moderation and reform before the Arab Spring uprising in 2011. However, this image quickly deteriorated when he promised “rivers of blood” to those opposing the revolution that toppled his regime. Later, a Tripoli court sentenced him to death, which he received a reprieve from due to an amnesty granted by authorities.

French lawyer Marcel Ceccaldi, who had been representing Seif al-Islam at the time, informed AFP about the circumstances surrounding his death: “He was killed by a four-man commando that stormed his house.”
