Meta’s Social Media Platforms Experience Widespread Outage

On Friday, millions of users worldwide faced disruptions accessing Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Meta’s primary social media and messaging platforms. The outage began around midday in various regions, with users reporting issues such as inability to refresh feeds, send messages, log into accounts, or load content.

The incident was quickly confirmed by Downdetector, an outage-monitoring website, which noted a significant increase in reported incidents as the disruption spread globally. This outages affected three of the world’s most widely used online platforms: Facebook and Instagram are among the largest social networks globally, while WhatsApp is crucial for communications services across many countries.

The incident prompted users to switch to alternative platforms to verify service availability, a common occurrence during previous Meta outages. Social media buzzed with error messages and failed login attempts as discussions trended.

Market participants and digital advertisers closely monitor such disruptions due to the significant role Meta’s platforms play in global advertising, customer communications, and content distribution. Prolonged outages can impact businesses reliant on these services for reaching customers and processing inquiries.

The recent outage echoed previous major incidents in 2024 and 2021, which affected hundreds of thousands of users globally and underscored the dependence of businesses, advertisers, and consumers on Meta’s platforms.
