Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the deaths of three Mexican nationals detained by U.S. immigration authorities this year.
Sheinbaum told reporters, “This can’t be happening.” The deaths include a 19-year-old who killed himself at a detention center in Florida on Monday and two others who died earlier this year.
The young man’s death was reported as suicide, but Sheinbaum called for a full investigation. Another Mexican, Heber Sanchez Domínguez, 34, died in ICE custody after being arrested for driving without a license. A third individual also died in detention facilities.
At least 30 migrants died in U.S. detention centers last year, the highest number since 2004. There have been at least 12 deaths so far this year. Sheinbaum vowed to use all available measures to defend the rights of Mexicans abroad and support their families.
