On Friday, the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics opened with an elaborate ceremony that showcased Italy’s rich cultural heritage and reaffirmed a significant commitment to themes of unity and harmony. As the Games approached, the spotlight turned to Milan not only as a showcase of Olympic excellence but also into a focal point for global concerns.
The city’s downtown buzzed with excitement on the eve of the event, highlighting high-level celebrations. However, this festive atmosphere was marred by ongoing protests against environmental impacts of hosting the Winter Olympics. Protesters marched through Milan, passing by the newly inaugurated Olympic Village, as they lit up the night sky with fireworks and smoke bombs.
Despite initial tensions, the demonstrations remained largely peaceful, punctuated only occasionally by banners denouncing the Games’ adverse effects on local communities. These banners included messages like “ICE out” and criticisms of both Giorgia Meloni’s government and Milan’s Mayor Beppe Sala.
Protesters argued that despite the Olympics’ grand ambitions, they had failed to generate significant economic benefits for Milan and Lombardy. Instead, funds originally allocated towards social welfare programs, public schools, and healthcare were diverted, leaving considerable damage in their wake — a situation so severe that it would be impossible to return even a fraction of the resources back to Italian citizens, especially those residing in Lombardy.
The chaos engendered by these protests ignited widespread anxiety among the populace and sparked scrutiny over the administration’s handling of the situation.
