Multan Sultans Take Over as New Name for Pakistan Super League Team

In a significant move that echoes through the corridors of Pakistan Super League (PSL) excitement, The Sialkot Stallionz have officially transformed into the Multan Sultans. This rebranding was announced by PSL CEO Salman Naseer during an exclusive press conference held on Tuesday.

Naseer’s announcement came amidst a flurry of activity following Gohar Shah’s ascent to lead The Sialkot Stallionz as its new CEO. According to Naseer, Shah had initiated the name change request immediately after assuming his role, driven by a fervent desire for a fresh identity in South Punjab.

During the press conference, Naseer provided insight into this pivotal moment: “You saw him amongst other bidders at the team auction for The Sialkot Stallionz. There was an overwhelming sense of passion and determination to represent their home turf with distinction. Gohar Shah, who had been a part of multiple bids including the one for The Sialkot Stallionz, felt deeply disappointed upon not securing the team.”

Notably, Naseer highlighted that the provision to alter a franchise’s name was integral throughout all PSL auction processes. As he elaborated: “During our previous auctions, we have always offered teams the opportunity to choose from six predetermined names. However, this time around, as soon as Gohar Shah took charge of The Sialkot Stallionz, he promptly submitted a request for a new team name.”

The CEO explained further that choosing ‘Multan Sultans’ was not merely coincidental but aligned with Shah’s vision: “There were other compelling options available at the time. However, Gohar preferred Multan due to its historical and cultural significance in the region. His commitment to representing South Punjab’s rich heritage through this new identity is evident.”

Naseer also underscored another significant development—a hike in annual franchise fees from Rs1.85bn to Rs2bn. This decision was presented as a strategic move by Naseer, aimed at stabilizing the PSL and ensuring sustainable operations moving forward.

Gohar Shah’s presence at the press conference was marked by joy and optimism: “We had always wondered how The Sialkot Stallionz would fare against the HBL PSL alone. Now, they will have a true sultan to rally their efforts under this new name.”

The CEO’s statement reflected both the commitment of Gohar Shah to revitalize The Sialkot Stallionz and his vision for ensuring that South Punjab remains well-represented in the league.

OZ Developers had originally submitted an auction bid worth Rs1.85bn to acquire The Sialkot Stallionz, setting a record high at the time but ultimately losing out to Shah’s team.
