Napoli Fights for Survival as Chelsea Stand-In Champions League Relegated Bids

Napoli face significant challenges as they edge closer to elimination from the Champions League, with Chelsea looming for Wednesday’s match. Struggling in Serie A following eight points from seven matches after last week’s 1-1 draw against FC Copenhagen, Napoli must secure a victory over Chelsea to advance to next month’s play-offs. Chelsea themselves need only a win to guarantee qualification and direct entry into the round of 16.

Despite their current crisis, Napoli have not shaken off previous setbacks. A crushing 3-0 defeat to Juventus last Sunday left them nine points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan, inflicting further embarrassment on coach Antonio Conte who expressed frustration over his team’s persistent injuries.

Conte has faced a series of personnel issues this season, starting with Romelu Lukaku’s hamstring injury that sidelined him until the 79th minute of that recent match against Juventus. Antonio Vergara stepped in as an academy graduate for a substitute role, and new signing Giovane made his debut but only as a replacement player.

Conte’s squad has been further depleted by injuries including Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (hamstring), David Neres (ankle surgery in London), Kevin De Bruyne (right hamstring surgery ongoing until April), and Andre-Franck Anguissa (back issues).

Coach Conte acknowledges the tough challenges ahead, describing his team as navigating “in open waters with very high waves” but still committed to their fight. He emphasizes that players are risking significant physical health in their efforts, playing every third day without proper training and facing high-intensity demands due to limited rotation options.

Only a return from injury provides hope for Napoli; Romelu Lukaku’s inclusion in the European squad gives him another opportunity to face Chelsea, a club he struggled with previously last season when 11 points were enough to avoid elimination. A victory would provide much-needed relief to an overburdened squad.
